Private Label Packaging Guide

Private label turns a commodity into your product, but it also moves responsibility onto you — for the artwork, for the label's legal accuracy and for the minimum order that printed material forces.

Decide the format first

Pack size drives everything else: material, machine, minimum run and unit cost. Decide the retail weights your market expects before you commission any design, because artwork drawn for the wrong dimensions has to be redone.

What the label must carry

Product name, net weight, ingredient or origin declaration, batch or lot code, best-before date and the responsible business's name and address. The exact wording and language depend on your destination, and the business named on the pack carries the legal responsibility for it.

Plan around the minimum

Printed film and cartons have their own minimum runs, often larger than the product order you had in mind. Many buyers start in bulk or plain packaging, prove the product and the supply relationship, and move to private label once volume justifies the print run.
